Great Movie full of Canadian history everyone should see it
Saving Private Ryan in a WWI setting instead of WWII. Most reviews positive in support of a Canadian production...
great must see movie
Not perfect but a good depiction of Canada in wartime and some of the most realistic and mesmorizing battlefield action scenes I have ever seen. As a former soldier, I could relate to many of the simple interactions, comraderie, and humour. Two hours of mud and guts would not have attracted Canadians in droves to see this and I think Gross did his best to appeal to all potential moviegoers while remaining faithful to the story.
To be blunt, this is the finest Canadian movie ever made and should be mandatory viewing for every patriotic Canadian. I saw it with 2 friends and we all left with tears in our eyes. We don’t have enough films celebrating Canadian history and heroism and we all owe Paul Gross a huge thank you for making it.
Excellent movie, somewhat disappointed as billed as Canada's most expensive movie ever, with lots of hype about battle of Passchendaele. Movie is more a chick flick, centered around battle. When they do the war scenes they are amazing. Overall it's worth seeing.
What a wonderfull movie we enjoyed it greatly. Congratulations to Paul Gross and all the great cast members the war scenes were so realistic and the scenery was so beautiful. We saw this movie Saturday evening and at the end of the movie everyone in the audience stood until all the credits were over. A wonderful sign of respect, very touching. The closing song was so beautiful and haunting.
Was a good movie but I left feeling kind of chipped, the story had little too do with the Passchendaele Battle, it was more a story about 3 peoples lives, would have like to have seen more about the history and the battle like the title and all the ads suggested.
A great movie. People say the previews were deceiving but were they really? Sure the movie doesn't focus a lot on the battle of Passchendaele but if you read up on the movie you'll realize that it's not just about a soldier's life on the battlefield. It's about his life back home as well, about the people back home and what they had to go through. People who say it's boring because of the romance missed the point and probably are too used to the Hollywoodized movies. This movie really hit home for me, and I couldn't move from my seat until the credits ended.
Not amazing but a great appreciation of canadian involvement in WW1 and an excellent movie that doesn't need to exceed expectations to be good.
Nothing less than outstanding
this is a great movie!
Wow. They did good on this one. Not one moment of disinterest during the movie. Well done Paul Gross. 5/5 definitely.
Wonderful movie. Historically accurate for both battle scenes. Also very romantic. Bring tissues since even the boys will cry for this one!!!
i saw this week-end. i found very good :-)
tis stupid
I thought this was an excellent movie - I did not however feel much of a connection between Michael and Sarah - could that be because of the time 1917 - victorian era?
Fails to live up to expectations. The movie has little to do with the battle that the movie is titled for. Disappointing.
Exceptional! Very well done! Moving and highly entertaining. Kudos to Paul Gross and for everyone else involved in the production of this film.
Poorly done and misleading by title. A corny love story. Not a film about war or Passchendaele. Should have been made-for-TV film and felt we were back watching Road to Avonlea. After waiting so long for this film to be released, total disappointment.
Like many others, I have been eagerley awaiting a Canadian film on the Great War, as my Grandfather was a proud member of the Canadian Corp. Unfortunately, this movie was not it. As some have already mentioned, I was drawn in by the commercials depicting battle scenes and trench warfare, but those scenes constituted about 20 minutes of the entire movie. The name of the movie is also deceiving, as not much was shown of the actual battle for Paschendale. I think a more fitting title would have been 'Calgary', as this is where it takes place. This movie is a love story and not much else. I thought Paul Gross did a great job, but the actor that played 'David Mann' was absolutely horrible. I thin
Absolutely captures the soldier culture of Canadians at war, no matter the time period. The love story was not overdone, but the dialogue was uncomfortable at times. The scenes in the trenches were very realistic, and this is the best war movie I have ever seen.
Very good movie, loved it! Love that it is Canadian all the way!! Go see this movie!
It depicted the horrors of the battle in what seemed to be an accurate light. It also picked up on the customs and nuances of the time.
OMG OMG We just saw it this afternoon and neither my husband or myself spoke all the way home....it was so powerful, so touching, so wonderful to see our war heros celebrated. This movie should be a must see for all students attending any school in Canada. It makes us so very proud to be Candian and since my grandfather was in WW1 and both our fathers where in WW2 the movie was that much more special. I could go on and on about this movie how it made you laugh, cry and truly see the horror of war. I must say in closing I am against war and hope we never send men to a world war again. This movie is a credit to all who partisipated in it and a must see. Thank you so very much for doing th
I normally don't do this sort of thing, but, this is the exception. This is one extremely powerful movie and I highly recommend it. For a movie that is 100% Canadian, the screen play, the acting, and the directing are first rate. I would be amazed if this movie did not win multiple Oscars.
One of the better movies I've seen in a long time. I was expecting a corny made in Canada movie, but was given a beautiful, powerful, moving epic. It left myself and the audience planted in or seats after the ending.
Good story, with several sub-plots. Combines action and romance. Gritty view of war. Enlightening perspective on Canada for Canucks. Nice job, Paul Gross.
A terrific movie. A wonderful tribute to my great uncle and the many brave young Canadians like him who never came home from WW1.
Great Canadian Movie!!!
Extremely well done.
Excellent movie !!!
Finally, a really good english language canadian movie
beautiful cinematography...touching love story...a must see...most enjoyable..fitting tribute to 90th anniversary to end of WW1
An absolutely awful film in which there was more bad acting than anything else. I was hoping for a good Canadian war film, but was sadly disappointed with a very corny and lame romance movie that wasted over 2 hours of my time. The best part of the movie is when the credits are rolling and primary source video of the soldiers who fought in WWI is rolled through. In short, save your money and stay away from this film!
Not the movie the trailers or tv ads lead you to believe. A good love story but very little to do with Passchendaele.
My grandfather died at Passchendale - he was a stretcher bearer and it affected me greatly. I was always aware of how much the soldiers gave up for us as the Great War was one that had to be fought but it is hearwrenching. Breaks my heart to think he went through that while my great grandmother struggled here to look after my grandmother and great uncle by herself all the while sending packages to him of knitted socks, etc. She never married again and it forever affected their lives. His memory remains alive within our family and this brought it home in a truly graphic way.
Well done.
It's about time that Canadians started to learn and appreciate what Canada is about and who truly shaped this Dominion. God Save the Queen!
not epic but truly a great movie! There is flaws yes but it is the first world class Canadian movie. Maybe we ca build on it!
Best Canadian Movie a long time
Good movie; however, there were a few inaccuracies re: Calgary. If this is a true story, it is amazing
Awesome, I'm going again.
This is a poorly made movie. Not good enough to be a made for TV soap. The start reminds me of a not so good version of Road to Avonlea and it just goes downhill from there. Paul Gross should be ashamed for wasting "the most money on a Canadian film ever". This does no service to Canadian history!
just as good as saving private ryan!!
Was more of a lovey dovey movie but well put together, the battle scenes are better than Ryan.
A true war movie, with amazing graphics. I was moved by this picture and I hope you all can feel the same love that I did for this movie. Definetely a five star!!. Look for more of my reviews. E.B.A.
What a great movie. This movies encompass all aspects of the horror of and the value of love.
An excellent movie. The movie showed the true story of the hardships suffered by the men in the trenches and the incompetence of the officers.
This is definitely not a movie for those under 18. It includes nudety and shocking violence which are both shown on a very graphic level. The movie seems very choppy and there is a huge amount of language and drug abuse. I was hoping for an uplifting film that honoured Canadians for their sacrifice not tainting it as hollywood often does. This is definitely a movie to watch with both remotes in hand.
