Passchendaele is a very good movie. However, it does have several flaws - the biggest one being a failure to examine the actual battle in more detail. If I had read no Canadian or WWI history beforehand, I could have walked into the theatre, watched the movie, and then walked out having learned very little about the strategic and tactical situation surrounding Passchendaele, and the overarching role of the Canadian Army. I also tend to agree with other reviewers that the love story tends to overshadow the rest of the movie. Not only does it overshadow, it bogs down the plot somewhat. As a representation of what PTSD does to soldiers, Passchendaele fails miserably. The vast majorit
Wonderful Movie - Loved Sarah Slean singing "After The War" at the end of the movie! Beautiful voice! BG
It was amazing. Stayed until the crdits were done.
I think this movie was a very poor portrail of the battle of Paschendaele. It spent way too much time on the relationship aspect of the movie and not enough time on the actual battle. Overall I thought this movie was a let down.
it was amazing my school and i saw it for a school trip and me and my best friend were crying so much, and we were even crying when we where on the bus going back to my school...it really touched us cause it shows alot of what happened back then and what they went through...cause the same story that they had and feelings for eachother where the same for others aswell.....it made me realize how much they went through and how stupid the cause was for....they did this for freedom for us and we should thank them........it was astonishing!!!!!!!!!and amazing!!!!!!
Excellent Canadian movie. Should be part of the Hight School curriculum.
All of you who say "bad depiction of trench warfare", how many of you actually fought in WWI in trenches? What makes you so convinced that this is truly a bad depiction? Did you really experience trench warfare first hand? I highly doubt that. Because you read some book, read some article or saw some documentary on History Channel doesnt make you an expert to make such hollow statements. I don't pass judgment on whether this was realistic or not since I wasn't there. The movie did employ military consultants so they know more than all of us combined. The only thing that I would change aboout this movie is the title. Passchendaele was only a backdrop for this very vivid love story. I gi
I think this is a great movie. So it doesn't teach much about the war and the title may be a bit misleading, I loved it. It was a story about true love and heroism. Amazing movie for all chick-flick lovers.
This is a misleading movie. It is NOT focused on the battle at Passchendaele but rather it's a LOVE STORY with the back drop of the battle at Passchendaele. The movie could've taken place anywhere, anytime. And to have all those soldiers cower and flee when Dunn's unit came in for relief? How is that a good portrail of our courageous soldiers? This movie is fine as a dramatic love story. But the marketing people shouldn't have shoved this film down our throats propoganding that it was some epic war story or a tribute to our WWI vets. Because it definitely was not. It was generic and cliche. It should have been called Pashion Dale. That would've made more fricking sense.
Very moving story about the sacrifices, courage, focus and persistence of our Canadian forces during this horrible battle. Why can't we humans learn to live together, instead of continuing to shed blood in the name of pride, religion and differences?
one of the most amazing movies I've seen in years. Paul did an amazing job. One of the greatest movies, nevermind just CDN movies. I saw it tonight. Rememberance Day night. We will never forget. Thanks Paul.
Excellent movie, excellent story line, excellent directing, excellent acting!! Great movie!
a must see
At the end of the movie the theatre was silent .... no one moved. What more can I say?
This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. As a huge history buff this movies was historically incorrect and a poor excuse to bare that title Passiondaele. It taught nothing of the war and was a sappy love story that tried to be poetic. I urge you not waste your money
I'm afraid the equilibrium shifted in favour of the home front rather than the war in Contintental Europe. It dragged on much too long regarding the personal relationships and unfortuntately despite great efforts; was influenced by modern day in both speech and ideology. The combat footage seemed to be well researched but was marred by the symbolic "Canada's Golgotha" which in my opinion had no relevance and was not appropriate. I realize making an authentic film about a war long past is difficult and I commend the effort, unfortunately I feel that it fell dreadfully short in truly reflecting what happened.
Very well produced movie with a good realistic story.
Just plain awful. I have to believe the positive reviews here are from the terribly uninformed. This is a poorly told love story. Very little to do with Passchendaele or the realities of trench warfare. That which it does attempt to show us is poorly done. Paul, go back to TV.
This period of history, and Canadian involvement, should be required learning for all Canadians but this movie is a lousy love story simply set during a poignant time in history. Do not go to this movie expecting to better understand WWI or trench warfare. Released close to November 11th, producers are tugging at heartstrings. A more objective view sees poor production values, over acting and a made for TV feel.
First off, for all of you who think this was horribly made, I disagree. I think it was really touching, and it makes me proud to be a Canadian. And seriously, I'd like to see all you haters try to make a movie like that. Acting is already as stressful as it is. Combine that with producing and writing the movie, that's just amazing. Secondly, even though this story is mostly based on a love story, have some respect. This IS a film based on one of Canada's greatest history. Don't trash this movie just because it has romance in it. You should be happy that there is even a movie based on the Battle of Passchendaele. Have you seen another movie based on that or any REAL wars for that matter? I h
I really wanted this movie to be special. Every element was a disaster...I mean brutal. Only an emotional attachment to the "real" events or a made for TV(poor) mentality/expectation will get you through it.
best film ever!!!!!!!!!!! go see it. it will make you be like this movie is awesome!
Just an excellent production, great acting and fabulous cinematography. Great job Paul!!
Great!!! Excellent made in Canada Movie!!! Paul Gross should be very proud!!!
Bad movie...Advertised as being about the war but very little action. ten minutes at the start and 15 at the end. Love story in the middle. Wait for the dvd.
The cinematography for this movie was incredible. The costuming was great. The war images were very realistic. The plot was a little weak, but it was still a very well done movie. I was very impressed.
Didn't like the storyline compared to the book. Characters were a little weak. Needed more depth.
They tried to make the movie like saving Pvt. Ryan, but it didnt even come close. The story was badly written, the special effects sucked, and one more thing.. what the heck was that thing with crucifying that Canadian soldier?? IT DIDNT FIT. By God, I'd give this movie -5 starts if I could.
Terribly written sophmoric bit of tripe. an embarrassment to Canada, and an insult to vets. this movie should never have gotten further than a CBC made for TV movie. hoaky lines that make you cringe. considering it is supposedly about WW1 it's odd that virtually the entire thing takes place in Calgary. Paul Gross does an ok job acting but his character never seems to really notice he is or was in a war. he remains cool and collected even when supposedly washing out with PTSD. Finally the whole Jesus carrying the cross sillyness is downright embarrassing. Come on, the veterans deserve better than this garbage as a memorial. The whole thing looks like one long Canadian Heritage Moment vignette
If i said this was good id be lieing, it was absolutely terrible. I fell asleep half way through because the beginning was dreadful. It had such bad acting and the plot was so bad, like all the guy said the whole movie was "i can see a picture". Also what was the whole romance thing, it made no sense and was so bad like maby if they left the chick flick part out id give it 2 stars. Definit must not see unless you like wasting money or having nap.
I wish that it was more about the war instead of the pathetic love story between two people that could not even "act" like they had chemistry. Terrible and sooo disappointing.
epic movie. i love it. for those who say otherwise, stop hating. it's a great film.
This was a great Canadian movie. Paul Gross managed to get so many points of view into one script--the horror of battle; the commraderie of the men and their dedication to one-another; the passionate beliefs of those on the homefront (particulary the pro-British rhetoric of the time); the changing role of women during this time period; the senselessness of war; the genuineness of the men--not all were "clean-cut Canadian heroes" but all made great sacrifices. Perhaps some who critisize this movie do so because it can seem contrived to get all of these (and more) themes into one movie. We are so used to movies that are mere sound-bites that gloss over history. Paul Gross told a truely Can
An exceptional movie. It made me proud to be a Canadian. Bravo Paul Gross!
My daughter and I saw Passchendaele together and we both thought it was amazing. At the end nobody moved, we all sat and watched the final credits and pictures. To bring this movie out before Remembrance Day was awesome. My father fought in WW2 and I have 3 brothers in the forces and 2 have been to Afganistan. Thank You Paul Gross for a movie that gives Canadian troops the credit they deserve.
good movie a must see for us canadians to remember those who have fought for our freedom i liked the ending..
Awful movie. Passchendaele was a huge step for Canaidians, Little was said about this battle that cost many lives. This was a love story before anything else. (Chick Flick) They should have called it "Love at War" or some dumb title like that. The Christ seen in this movie was also dredful, thier was no need for it. This could have been a good movie, but they blew it.
i would pay to see this movie again!
This was an amazing movie. As someone who was born well outside the time of World War I seeing this was a massive eye opener for me. There is definitely some blood, but everyone, kids included, should see this and if at all possible see it with their grandparents.
An absolutely great Canadian Production. I say Canadian as it is not probably interesting to Americans as it has nothing to do with their history. Paul GROSS would probably be nominated for an Oscar if this movie was made about Americans(as is reflected by the reviews on Rottentomatoes) It is a must see for "ALL Canadians and is entertaining for all sexes. It has enough war content to keep husband interested and enough romance to keep the wife interested. Definitely a couples movie.
I really wanted to see this movie AND like it but have to admit that as a movie it fell flat .... there were so many cheesy and unlikely things happening. Those chance meeting and that cross carrying farce. I mean, was that part a historical fact ? Could not have been. Could somebody actually explain why that young soldier was running over to the German side? What was the point?
terrible.
horrible - boring.
I believe this movie is almost ahead of its time in Canadian movie-making. When I left the theatre after watching the last battle scene, I felt as if I had a grenade in my stomach and I was wiping away tears that had appeard from nowhere. I don't remember the last time that a movie had that effet on me. Paul Gross has done an amazing job in creating a movie that is truly Canadian. We should all be proud of that and encourage and celebrate his talents as a Canadian film maker. We can do this!!! He is to be commended and congratulated. I will definitely recommend this movie. A movie that inspires pride in our country Canada, and Canadians all over again. A much needed feeling these days. Paul Gross deserves a few awards on this one. The cinematography, is superb. The movie emotionally moving, which is rare these days amongst so many that rely on effects. You stumble to see which point of view of war is the dominant one, but there I don't want to give to much away. Is there a dominant one ?, I think is the real question.
The director's best since Men With Brooms.
Watch this and think about what our men (and women) have endured and are enduring, for the sake of us all. In the movie, Gross' character was a soldier and he returned to the hell in France with the full knowledge of what could -- and probably would -- happen. That's what soldiers are and that's what they do. This is an extraordinatory movie and Paul Gross is to be congratulated. I hope the movie industry rewards him by recognition at awards time. Brava Zulu, Mr. Gross.
Excellent movie. All ages should see this.
Very accurate and a tribute to the men who endured the terrible conditions on the battlefront.
very bad movie
