The six Mitford sisters — Nancy (Bessie Carter), Pamela (Isobel Jesper Jones), Diana (Joanna Vanderham), Unity (Shannon Watson), Jessica a.k.a. "Decca" (Zoe Brough), and Deborah (Orla Hill), along with their brother Tom (Toby Regbo) live comfortably aristocratic lives with their parents, David Freeman-Mitford, the second Baron Redesdale (James Purefoy), a.k.a. "Farve," and Sydney Bowles Mitford, a.k.a. "Mav" (Anna Chancellor), in the country home Asthall Manor in Oxfordshire. Although their parents were distant, they had many servants to care for the girls, who came up with their own language, Boudledidge, that no one else could understand.

From an early age, several of the sisters showed eccentricities. Jessica had a "Running Away" jar to which she added every penny she could get her hands on, while Unity had a fondness for Germany that went far beyond what anyone could have imagined. She convinced her mother to let her move to Germany, where she found out which café Hitler often frequented and made sure to be at a table where he would pass by with his officers on his way to a curtained table in the back. After a while, he invited her to join them, and the two became friends. She found him charming, eventually inviting many of her family members to meet him.

The most beautiful of the girls, Diana, married Bryan Guinness (Calam Lynch), heir to the barony of Moyne, but divorced him after four years and two children when she fell in love with fascist leader Oswald Mosley (Joshua Sasse), who was married at the time.

Jessica, a communist, took her running away money and ran off with Esmond Romilly, who was fighting the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. He was a nephew of Winston Churchill, who was also related to the Mitford family and with whom they had a warm relationship.

Nancy becomes a best-selling novelist, but as war looms within Germany, the sisters become divided in their beliefs.

Based on a true story.
