Dr. Luther Brooks (Sidney Poitier) is the first African American doctor in the county he was trained in. Brooks, a little nervous because he just passed his state board examination requests to be stationed as a junior resident for a year.
While working one day, Brooks encounders brothers Jonny and Ray Biddle. Both of them were shot in the leg by policemen while attempting robbery. As Brooks is taking care to their wounds, he is bombarded with racial slurs.
