In 1993, Chris Nicola, a professional New York detective and amateur caver, discovered artifacts (shoe, comb, key, etc.) in an underground cave in southwestern Ukraine, suggesting that in the recent past, there were people living there. The locals tell him that during the Second World War, a handful of Jews hid in the cave. Ten years later Nicola finds four survivors of this incredible adventure—Saul Stermer, Sam Stermer, Sonia Dodyk and Sima Dodyk, who talk on camera about their experiences. Their stories are illustrated with dramatic recreations by actors, interspersed with excerpts from the memoirs of the matriarch of their extended family.
