Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green) is a U.S. veteran who keeps seeing the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her best friend who died after they served a tour together in Afghanistan. Suffering from PTSD, Merit has to attend group sessions to discuss it, but she's constantly distracted by Zoe's presence.
When her grandfather (Ed Harris), a Vietnam veteran, is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, her mother asks Merit to move into his lake house with him and make sure he doesn't wander off until they find a nursing home where he can live safely. However, he refuses to leave his beautiful property, where he's surrounded by wildlife and nature, and where he lived with his wife until her death a year earlier.
