The true story of the 19th century Belgin priest who volunteered to go to the island of Molokai, to
console and care for the lepers.
At the time, all who had leprosy, or were though to have it, were declared animals and exiled to a
lonely, barren peninsula for life. There, the strong created a "living hell" forcing young
girls into prostitution, robbing food from the sick and young, and putting the weaker into
virtual slavery.
Father Damien arrived with only his own peasant faith and unwavering sense of justice, and
almost single-handedly changed the lives and fates of the lepers of Molokai.
