A Rhode Island State Trooper named Charlie (Carrey) has a multiple personality disorder. One
personality is crazy and aggressive, while the other is more friendly and laid back.
When his wife takes off with a limo driver, Charlie has a mental breakdown. His split personalities are usually treated through medication, but while transporting a woman, Irene (Zellweger) across the country, the trooper fails to take his pills.
While traveling both he and his alter personalities fall in love with Irene. But as the lack of medication takes effect, Charlie finds himself fighting over the same woman with his alter-ego, Hank.
