Louise, as she does every year, spends the summer on the coast in a seaside resort called Biligen. When the elderly woman misses the very last train back to town, she finds herself alone in the town. A storm hits, cutting the electricity and telephone, leaving Louise completely isolated from the world. Determined to survive, she builds a shelter on the beach, then adopts a daily routine.
She’s soon joined by a talking dog who accompanies her on daily walks. Louise eventually stops worrying about her predicament and begins to enjoy it. Although the holidays pass without bringing anyone back and the winter settles in strength, memories of her childhood flood her thoughts.
