Following the failures of French generals Jean-Andoche Junot and Nicolas Jean-de-Dieu Soult in 1807 and 1809, Napoleon Bonaparte sent a powerful army to invade Portugal in 1810. The French army, which was commanded by Marshal Massena, easily made their way to the center of the country—but little did they know that the Anglo-Portuguese army, led by General Wellington, was waiting to take them down on the other side.
