Tommasso, 11, lives with his older sister Viola and their father Renato, a cameraman whose wife, Stefania, left him for a richer man. In order to please his father, who wants him to become a champion swimmer, the boy involves himself with this sport while dreaming of playing soccer.

However, one evening, Stefania returns to the house, repenting, to beg her husband to take her back. Initially furious, Renato decides to give her a second chance. Tommasso tepidly welcomes his mother back. Unable to understand his parents’ actions, he closes himself off from those around him.
