October 1970. Television reports on the latest terrorism perpetrated by the Quebec Liberation Front (FLQ). Meanwhile, 13-year-old Manon takes stock of the crisis facing her small working-class family in eastern Montreal. Her father is very ill and her mother is on the verge of depression. With neither one holding down a job, money begins to run out. She hears a conversation between her mother and a social worker, who says that Manon and her brother are going to be placed in foster care. In order to keep that from happening, Manon, inspired by the terrorist acts of the FLQ, decides to take her elderly neighbor hostage with the help of her cousin Martin and, like the members of the Chénier cell, negotiate the terms of her future against the old lady’s release.
