During the May 1968 Paris insurrection against the government of Charles de Gaulle, François, a young poet, and his buddies man take part in the demonstration, which includes tipping over cars and manning a barricade.
The movement fails and a year later, disillusioned François is living a bohemian lifestyle at the private mansion of a rich friend, along with a tribe of artists and intellectuals. He meets Lilie, a painter, with whom he falls in love and enjoys great philosophical discussions.
