He is ridiculed by his friends but finds solace in his gentle young girlfriend, Annette. He never met his father and is the shame of her mother, who never wanted him and never loved him.
One day he meets Marguerite, a 95-year-old woman who begins to read novels to him. Germain discovers the magic of books, from which he believed himself forever barred. But Marguerite is losing her sight, and Germaine, with Annette's assistance, tries to learn to read so he can in turn, read to the old lady.
