Gravedigger Conrad Tremblay succumbs to the charms of Madeleine, a prostitute, with whom he has multiple rendezvous in the small house adjacent to the cemetery, which is provided to him for use as an office. Pathologically in love, this naive family man would give up his wife and child to be with the prostitute.

However, she has other projects that she must first execute. She plans to kidnap a teenager for ransom. When the abduction goes badly, Madeleine confides in Conrad, who promises to keep her secret. However, when the police come to question him, his silence makes him a suspect.
