A penniless stage actor in his thirties, Louis leaves his wife Clotilde and his daughter Charlotte, aged eight. During rehearsals for a new play with his acting troupe, he begins a love affair with Claudia, an actress who has not been chosen for a role in six years. In a tiny attic apartment, the new couple leads a bohemian life, punctuated by visits to Charlotte. However, Claudia fears Louis is unfaithful, and she leaves him after she meets with an architect who offers her a position as an archivist, which comes with an apartment. Desperate, the actor shoots himself, aiming for the heart, but only puncturing a lung. Thanks to his passion for the theater and his sister Esther’s presence at his bedside, hope is reborn.
