In 1976, following the break-up of her marriage, Agnès Le Roux returned from Africa to Nice, where she was met at the airport by her mother’s lawyer and right-hand man, Maurice Agnelet. Her mother Renée owned the Palais de la Méditerranée casino, of which Agnès was a shareholder. Agnès fell in love with Maurice, a playboy whose intentions were far from pure. Agnès wanted to sell her shares in the casino and start her own business, but her mother wouldn’t release them to her. Maurice also had a beef with Renée, when she didn’t make him the casino’s senior manager.
Maurice plotted against Renée, enlisting the help of Fratoni, the owner of a rival casino, to coerce Agnes to vote against her mother at a board meeting, which allowed the casino to be sold to Fratoni. The money from the transaction went into the couple’s joint bank account and shortly after, Agnes disappeared without a trace. Years later, Renée fought to get Maurice charged with murder in the disappearance of her daughter.Director: | André Téchiné |
