Daniel, a mild-mannered university professor, intends to quietly spend his summer holidays in his Hamburg apartment. He buys a ring with a sun on it from Julie, a jewellery vendor at a flea market. She tells him that he will meet a woman wearing a sun just like the one on the ring, and he will fall in love.
She gives him a pass to a festival, and shows up wearing the sun symbol. However, Daniel first runs into Melek, a beautiful Berliner of Turkish origin who is wearing a T-shirt with a sun on it. Melek soon leaves on a plane for Istanbul, but Daniel realizes he wants to see her again, at any cost.
He borrows an old car from a friend and sets out for Turkey, and on the way picks up a hitchhiker, who turns out to be Julie.
