Chuck Green (Patton Oswalt) uses social media to keep in touch with his estranged son, Franklin (James Morosini). When he tries clicking on Franklin's profile and gets an error message, he realizes he’s been blocked. Determined to be involved in his son’s life by whatever means possible, Chuck cooks up a controversial plan.
He creates a new social media profile, posing as a young woman named "Becca," and sends Franklin a friend request. Soon, the two of them are chatting and although Chuck has to adapt to the young person vocabulary, he gets to know his son better. However, his catfishing scheme begins to unravel when Franklin proposes video chatting with "Becca."
