When her elderly patient passes away, shy caregiver Johanna Parry (Kristen Wiig) moves to a new town to work for Mr. McCauley (Nick Nolte) and his granddaughter, Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld).
Sabitha and her friend trick Johanna into thinking Sabitha's father Ken (Guy Pearce) has feelings for her. Johanna, who doesn't have much relationship experience, eagerly takes the bait, even though Ken barely knows she exists. What Sabitha doesn't realize, however, is that Johanna is a woman with deep emotions, who longs for a future that includes a home and family of her own.
