The Symbionese Liberation Army, arguably the most notorious and flamboyant domestic terrorist group in American history, set forth in 1973 to incite the violent overthrow of the U.S. government. Their February 1974 kidnapping at gunpoint of 19-year-old newspaper heiress Patty Hearst from her apartment inspired what might be described as the first true media "frenzy."
Kept blindfolded for two months in a closet, sexually and physically abused, forced to record messages blasting her loved ones after being untruthfully told her parents had refused to give in to ransom demands, Hearst was finally brainwashed into joining the SLA and participating in their crimes.
