College freshman Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper), a devout Christian, finds his faith challenged on his first day of Philosophy class by the dogmatic and argumentative Professor Radisson (Kevin Sorbo). The professor tells the class that they have to deny the existence of God in writing or face failing the class.
Although the other students start to write "God Is Dead" as they've been told, Josh finds himself facing a decision. Does he choose his faith, or his future. Josh nervously refuses to complete the assignment, which gets him an angry reaction from the smug professor. Instead, Radisson gives him another assignment. If Josh won't admit "God Is Dead," he then has to prove God exists by using research, intellectual arguments and evidence over the course of the semester, which will culminate in a debate with Radisson in front of the class.
If Josh fails to convince his classmates of God’s existence, he will fail the course. With almost no one in his corner, Josh wonders if he can really fight for what he believes. Can he actually prove God's existence? Or should he just write "God Is Dead" and move on?
