Girls Always Happy
Wu (director Yang Mingming) and her Mother (Nai An), who stays unnamed, live together in Beijing, sharing a hutong, one of those old-fashioned low-rise compounds, dotted around narrow lanes and courtyards. Hutongs are modest houses but recently - like in many big cities - are experiencing a renaissance from working class accommodations to trendy hipster pads. Nevertheless, Wu and Mother are no hipsters and their hutong choice is due to the economic struggle they endure every day.
