Fashion magazine editor Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson) teams up with fashion photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) to find a new look for the magazine, with models who look intelligent. They find a bookstore in Greenwich Village called Embryo Concepts run by a shy clerk, Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn). They take photos of Jo for the first new fashion shoot.
After processing the photos, they realize Jo has exactly the look they want and return to the bookstore for more photos, but when Jo figures out that they want her to model for them, she refuses.
They finally convince her to do some modeling after promising her a trip to Paris, where her idol, the famous philosopher and professor Emile Flostre (Michel Auclair) is giving a lecture.
But when they get to Paris, it turns out that his lecture and an important fashion gala are scheduled for the same evening.
