When Manhattan socialite Frances Price's (Michelle Pfeiffer) husband suddenly dies of a heart attack, she reacts by going on a planned skiing weekend. Twelve years later, she's spent all of her inheritance and is broke. When a friend offers Frances her apartment in Paris, she and her son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) pick up and move.
Malcolm is attached to his mother who, 12 years earlier, took him out of boarding school so he could live with her. They're so inseparable that he hasn't been able to tell her that he's engaged to his girlfriend Susan (Imogen Poots).
In Paris, they make friends with a group of eccentric characters. Mme Reynaud (Valerie Mahaffey) is a former New Yorker who knows all about Frances from the society papers and is a fan; Julius (Isaach de Bankole) is a private investigator and Madeleine (Danielle Macdonald) is a clairvoyant. When Frances' cat goes missing, Madeleine helps search for him, because Frances believes the cat is the reincarnation of her husband.
