After missing out on a contract for a film soundtrack, Gabriel, a musician, regretfully accepts a position as director of the Parisian branch for an American undertaker. But before he begins his post, the young man must take a one-month training course with Gervais Bron, who's been with the firm for for fifteen years. However, when Gervais learns that this greenhorn was appointed director—the post he wanted—Gervais makes things as difficult as possible for the new recruit.

To complicate matters, Gabriel has to hide his new situation from his parents, Bohemian artists who deride non-creative jobs, as well as from Claire, a young lawyer who's fallen for him.
