Fausta, a young Peruvian woman, is afflicted by a condition called "la teta asustada," which is believed to afflict children born to women who were raped and tortured during Peru's years of terrorism. Haunted by terrifying stories of her mother's ordeal, Fausta has developed a fear of men and sex and has inserted a potato into her vagina as protection from rape. When her mother dies, Fausta decides to bring her body back to her distant home province for burial.
In order to raise money for the trip, Fausta goes to work as a maid for Aida, a wealthy pianist/composer who is having difficulty composing his latest sonata. When he hears Fausta hum a song, he's inspired and offers to give her a pearl every time she sings for him. Meanwhile, though a tentative friendship with a middle-aged gardener, Fausta's fear of men gradually lessens.
