Country heiress Bathsheba Everdene (Julie Christie) is loved by three different men: Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Terence Stamp), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Peter Finch), a prosperous and mature bachelor.
Convinced that she is the intellectual superior of all three, Bathesheba loses many early opportunities for lasting happiness. Finally shedding herself of her haughty attitude, Bathsheba can finally unconditionally one of the men.
