June 1943. Fanny, a 13-year-old Jew, and her two sisters, Erika and Georgette, take refuge in the countryside in a boarding school, with many other persecuted children. When the activities of the establishment are uncovered, the children have to flee. Madame Forman, the headmistress of another school, takes them in.
In this new haven of peace, Fanny befriends Elijah, a handsome teenager who claims to have friends in the Resistance. But the respite is short lived. The next month, on July 25, Mussolini is arrested. Fearing for the safety of the children, Madame Forman organizes their flight to Switzerland.
Being one of the oldest, Elias, renamed Etienne, is put in charge of a group consisting of Fanny, her sisters and six other Jewish children. But a combination of circumstances will cause the children to wind up left to their own devices.
