In 1980s New York, Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch) is the creator of a popular children's television show called Good Morning Sunshine, as well as a designer and puppeteer on the show. His nine-year-old son Edgar designs a puppet named Eric and wants to show it to his dad, but Vincent is preoccupied. One morning, when Vincent is supposed to walk Eric to school, he's too busy arguing with his wife Cassie (Gaby Hoffman) and Edgar decides to walk alone.
By the time Vincent returns from work, he finds police at his home because Edgar never arrived at school and has gone missing. Full of self-loathing and guilt about Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV then Edgar will come home. As Vincent’s progressively destructive behavior alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.
