Afshin Ghaffarian (Reece Ritchie), a young, self-taught dancer in Iran, risks everything to follow his dream of becoming a dancer in a nation where dancing is banned.
Afshin and his friends create an underground dance company. Using their limited access to the Internet they watch music videos to learn dance moves from the likes of legends such as Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev. Through their own performances, Afshin and one of the other dancers, Elaheh (Frieda Pinto) realize their passion for dance, as well as each other.
