Émilie Tesson-Hansen is in charge of human resources for one of the divisions of the multinational company Esen. Recognized for her coldness, efficiency and loyalty, she must implement a restructuring plan that pushes employees who are deemed less successful to resign.
When one of those employees — Didier Dalmat — commits suicide by jumping out of his office window and falling into the courtyard of Esen’s headquarters as his horrified colleagues watch, Émilie’s universe crumbles. Spurred by the labor inspector in charge of investigating, Émilie is torn between her conscience and the interests of her bosses.
