Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) goes on a business trip to Hong Kong, stopping over in Chicago to see her ex-boyfriend for a tryst before flying home to her husband, Mitch Emhoff (Matt Damon) and young son Clark. Two days after arriving home in Minneapolis, she suffers a seizure and is rushed to the hospital, where she dies. Mitch soon discovers that Clark has also fallen ill and died.
Home Security representatives fear that the disease is a bioweapon and quickly take measures to keep the lethal virus from spreading. Dr. Erin Mears (Kate Winslet) from the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is sent to Minneapolis to investigate and put precautions into place to keep the virus from spreading. She links the disease to Beth.
Unfortunately, the virus spreads quickly to other cities. As the epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society falling apart at the seams.
