Aging couple Stella (Olympia Dukakis) and Dot (Brenda Fricker) have been together for 31 years through life's ups and downs. Now in their seventies, Stella is going deaf and Dot has trouble with her vision. Dotty's prudish granddaughter, Molly (Kristin Booth), decides the best place for Dot is a nursing home. As a result, Stella and Dot decide to leave their home in Maine and drive to Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. It's a last ditch effort to stay together.
On the way, they pick up a young hitchhiker, Prentice (Ryan Doucette). He left his small town home in Nova Scotia to become a modern dancer, but is returning to visit his dying mother. Despite seeming quite confident, Prentice is confused and wounded and learns much from Stella and Dot as they wage their own battle to stay together after three decades as a couple.
