When Trudi learns that her husband Rudi is terminally ill, she suggests visiting their children in Berlin without telling him the truth. As Franzi and Karl don't care much about their parents, Trudi and Rudi go to the Baltic Sea, where Trudi suddenly dies.
Rudi is thrown out of gear, and leaves for Tokyo, where another son lives. Unfortunately, this one is also less than thrilled to see him. Finding himself alone in the big city, the widower makes a pilgrimage to Mount Fuji in the midst of the cherry blossom festival, a celebration of beauty, impermanence and new beginnings.
