Though Joel and Regis are half-brothers, they have nothing in common and never spend any time together. Joel has just gotten out of prison after serving time for stealing an elderly woman's purse. Regis is a married man with children, who obeys the law and takes pride in his job. But the two brothers are forced together when they both travel to the West Indies to be at their dying father's bedside. Worse, they'll share a strange experiencea journey through time. Because before he died, their father left them the emancipation document that freed their slave ancestors. When the two tear the letter up, they're magically transported to 1780, where they're captured and sold as slaves to the owner of a sugar cane plantation.
