Born in London, Carrie (Bel Powley) is a highly intelligent, but isolated and awkward genius. Now 19, she graduated from Harvard at only 18 and lives in New York City. After her mother died, she distanced herself from her father (Gabriel Byrne), who still lives in London, but attends sessions with a therapist he provides, Dr. Petrov (Nathan Lane).
Lonely and unhappy, Carrie disapproves of most of the people around her, believing them to be sex-crazed and immoral. However, when Dr. Petrov challenges her to follow a list that he says will make her happier, her world gets a little bigger than the small apartment she closets herself inside. She gets a job proofing legal documents at night and when she comes across a classified ad in which a man (Jason Ritter) who's engaged claims he's unsure about his upcoming wedding, she makes a date to meet him, if only to expose him to his fiancée.
Adapted from the acclaimed novel of the same name by Caren Lissner.
