Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz) is an outcast amongst her high school peers due to her awkwardness. At home, she's subject to her mother's (Julianne Moore) extreme religious beliefs. Not having been taught anything about procreation at home, when she gets her period at school, she's hysterical, fearing the blood means she's dying. Her classmates taunt her and make a video.
One girl, Sue (Gabriella Wilde), feels remorse and tries to make it up to Carrie by convincing her boyfriend Tommy (Ansel Elgort) to ask the shy outsider to the prom. Carrie is at first suspicious, but finally accepts, despite her mother's protestations. Meanwhile, mean girl Chris (Portia Doubleday), who was banned from the prom due after posting the video of Carrie to YouTube, decides to make prom unforgettable.
