Sue Buttons (Allison Janney) has daily affirmations that she repeats to make herself feel better about the way her life has turned out. When she goes to pick up her birthday cake, her name is spelled wrong and when she points it out, the clerk doesn't care. Her husband Karl (Matthew Modine) doesn't even remember that tomorrow is Sue's birthday — in fact, no one seems to remember it.
Nonetheless, she makes reservations at a swanky restaurant and when she goes to surprise her husband at work, Sue makes a discovery that changes her life.
The next day, when her half-sister Nancy (Mila Kunis), who's a TV reporter, arrives at Sue's house to find everything overturned, Sue, who seems in shock, explains that someone must have broken in and destroyed her house. She tells Nancy that Karl is missing. When Nancy and Sue go on TV to report the crime, it brings a lot of attention to Sue, who revels in the publicity the case inspires. Meanwhile, Karl's brother Petey (Jimmi Simpson) believes mobsters have kidnapped him and he sets out to get him back.
