In a remote Maine logging town, local school bus driver Lesley (Amy Morton) becomes distracted by a bluebird and fails to notice a sleeping boy in the back of the bus during her day-end inspection on a cold winter afternoon.
The results of her actions are tragic and set into motion a string of enormous consequences for the woman, whose fragility is further tested by her husband (John Slattery)—a logger preoccupied by the imminent closing of the town's paper mill—and the boy’s deadbeat mother Marla (Louisa Krause), who takes advantage of the situation.
