Upon release from prison, Kamel is deported from France to his native village in Algeria. Nicknamed "Kamel of France" by the inhabitants, the young man easily integrates into his new surroundings. But the peacefulness is disturbed by young religious fantatics, who try to impose their beliefs through intimidation.
Not long after his arrival, Kamel’s cousin Louisa returns home with her young son, fleeing from an abusive husband, and hoping to become a singer. But the young woman is greeted with contempt from her mother, who tells her to return to her husband. He comes to take her back, then abandons her on the road, taking off with their son.
Louisa sinks into a deep depression.
