Retired civil engineer Angus Stewart (Richard Dreyfuss), who's in his 70s, temporarily lives with his daughter Molly (Krista Bridges) and her husband (Lyriq Bent) after the loss of his beloved wife. He tries to make himself useful by helping his young grandson, Barney (Richie Lawrence), with his homework and teaching him about his passion, astronomy and the stars. However, failing health forces him to grudgingly move to a retirement home.
When billionaire entrepreneur Marcus Brown (Colm Feore) announces he's launching a lottery for a two-week journey to space on the first-ever commercial space flight, Barney encourages Angus to enter. With Barney's help, Angus fills out the online lottery form. Although it's open to people 18 to 65, Angus lies about his age – and about his heart problems.
To his surprise, Angus' dream comes true when he is chosen as one of three people who will board the space flight.
