In 1872, Englishman Phileas Fogg (David Niven) strikes a deal with a few skeptics: if he circumnavigates the entire world in just 80 days and returns before 8:45 p.m., he receives 20,000 pounds. Along with his servant Passepartout (Cantinflas), Phileas starts his journey in Paris, taking off in a hot air balloon.
Meanwhile, a rumor starts that Phileas has stolen a huge sum of money from the Bank of England, and Police Inspector Fix (Robert Newton) is sent to arrest him. Phileas and Passepartout visit many faraway lands on their journey: Spain, Hong Kong, Japan, San Francisco and India, where they meet Princess Aouda (Shirley MacLaine) and take her along with them for the remainder of their trip.
