Pierre Leduc, a lecturer at Laval University who also spends his time translating the work of of the late Polish poet Edward Stachura, has built his lonely life around books, words and silence. Discouraged by the ignorance of his students, just as he decides to quit his job, his estranged father, a real estate mogul, announces that he’s suffering from terminal cancer and wants Pierre back in his life. He tells Pierre he’s leaving his company to him, but Pierre refuses it outright. At the same time, Adele, a 13-year-old girl, shows up on his doorstep, asking if he’s her father. Having abandoned Adele’s mother when she was pregnant, now faced with his cowardice, Peter denies everything. But reality catches up as Adele is determined to have her father in her life, and his own father, seeing his end approaching, gets Pierre to come with him to visit his childhood home in Bas-St-Laurent.
