Saw the documentary about my good friends riding out the storm. Though I swore off all K-10 crap, I went to this one because of the soundtrack. It was delightful. No maudlin bullshit. No footage from CNN that you've seen a thousand times. No roving bands of thugs and mythical rapists. Just New Orleans folks looking out for their loved ones and neighbors. People banding together, with a heavy dose of humor, in the worst possible situation. A refreshing angle indeed.

On Sunday, August 28, (the eleventh anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina), Whole Foods Market at Broad Street (along with Broad Community Connections, Mountain Climbers and the Broad Theater) sponsored a free screening of the independent film, A Reason to Stay. This film was the passion project of directors Peter Becnel and Janene Knox. Peter, his wife Angela, and their two friends elected to stay in the Becnel’s Mid City New Orleans home to ride out the hurricane – as so many Gulf Coast residents had done before. Miraculously, they documented the experience with humor, humanity and compassion. The 120-seat theater was sold out and filled with residents from all over Mid City and beyond who wanted to share in the experience that had inexorably bound the city together over a decade earlier. ‘A Reason to Stay’ offered a comment on hope and the character of the people who stayed during and after the storm – indelibly marking their commitment and tenacity as the world looked on. Becnel and Knox entertained a 20-minute question and answer period following the film and the audience stayed, rapt, to share their experiences. The event underscored the ReFresh Project’s (Whole Foods, Liberty’s Kitchen, BCC, the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine, Boys Town, SPROUT NOLA and First Line Schools) commitment to being a platform for those things that are most relevant to our shared community. Despite the gravity of the subject matter, people enjoyed the message of hope and community and, as always, New Orleans walked away stronger for having shared an experience together. We were deeply honored to bring this important film to our neighbors in an accessible and hopeful way and look forward to the opportunity to do so again very soon.
