Author Léo Shepherd (Gérard Depardieu) is on the verge of winning the Nobel Prize when he decides to go to Stockholm by motorcycle, in spite of his daughter Virginia's protests. His son Paul (Guillaume Depardieu) calls to congratulate his father from whom he has been estranged for years and decides to join Léo on the road, but Léo is less than thrilled at the prospect.
He takes off with Paul chasing him, but when Léo gets in a serious accident, Paul drags him from the scene of the crime and they take off for Sweden in Paul's car. The police arrive and find the body of another motorist and Léo's papers. The news of Léo's death spreads.
