When her mother dies, Chantal, a Montreal teenager who doesn’t get along with her unemployed father, takes off in the direction of the Gaspé Peninsula. She has with her a photo of a beach in that area, where her mother played as a child and where she’d always dreamed of returning. Chantal wants to find the spot in the photo, but her search proves futile and when she runs out of money, she ends up sleeping outside. Serge, a quiet farmer in his thirties, finds her and takes her to his farm. He and his sister Laura jointly inherited the family farm, but Laura is putting pressure on Serge to sell the property. When Chantal decides to help with him run the farm, the two of them form a platonic intimacy.
