When her latest book flops and a scandal ensues, bestselling author Sophie Brown (Brooke Shields) wonders if she will ever recover from the damage. While reminiscing with her daughter, she discovers a photo of a castle to which her family has old ties. When she decides to travel to Scotland and visits the castle, she discovers it's up for sale.
She meets the haughty owner of the castle, Myles (Cary Elwes), a.k.a. the Duke of Dunbar, but he's reluctant to sell the castle to a foreigner. He points out all the problems with the old building in the hopes of discouraging her interest, but as he shows her around, they begin to grow on each other.
