In the second trailer for the James Wan-produced Lights Out, Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) kisses her boyfriend Bret (Alexander DiPersia) goodnight as he exits her apartment. She proceeds to get into her bed for what she assumes will be a regular night's sleep, but is awoken by a creaking, scratching noise by her bedroom door. She rolls over to see what the source of the disturbance is, and sees the silhouette of a hunched over woman on the floor. As an outside light momentarily illuminates the room, the woman disappears. But as soon as the light fades, she returns and lunges toward Rebecca.
As the trailer continues, we're introduced to Rebecca's younger brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) who tells a similar story. He claims he's being visited by a woman named Diana at their family home, and that she only appears in the dark. We learn from Rebecca and Martin's mom Sophie (Maria Bello) that Diana isn't a complete stranger. Sophie and Diana have a storied past together, and it seems that Diana is somewhat of a family curse.
A haunting cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" plays out over the chilling trailer, which ends with a quote from Rebecca: "Everyone is afraid of the dark, and that's what she feeds on."
