Culture war

January 05, 2026

I have been a frequent attendee, neighbor, and longtime supporter of The Loft Cinema. I’ve gone regularly, brought my classes, participated in giveaways, promoted events, and encouraged friends and family to attend. My decision to stop supporting the theater financially is not about disagreement with a single film, but about how criticism and labor concerns are handled institutionally. I have previously posted critical comments regarding the firing of an employee for wearing union apparel (a legally protected activity), as well as the decision to involve police during peaceful protests connected to a film screening. Those comments were issue-based and factual. After a recent comment expressing concern about the uncritical glorification of Brigitte Bardot, my personal account was blocked on Instagram. When I reached out privately for clarification, I was told my engagement had been “exclusively negative,” which is demonstrably untrue given my years of consistent and positive involvement. As a result, I will no longer attend screenings or donate to institutional fundraising efforts. I will instead direct my support toward the Loft workers and their union, whom I continue to support as a neighbor and community member. I believe independent cultural institutions should be able to engage with criticism without resorting to exclusion. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience here.

Disapointment

September 08, 2017

I like this theater because I am able to see movies that are not always shown in the 'big theaters' and also because it feels more intimate and friendly.... except for the last movie I saw which was Food Evolution. The write up on that film was inaccurate and gave the impression that it was a balanced view of both the pro and anti GMO arguments. It was not. The after film panel was one sided. And I left feeling that it was very possible that Monsanto had a hand in the financing/making of the film. This is surely a wake up call for me that I need to research more before I decide to see a film and not to just trust what is posted in the Loft's member magazine.
